Not everyone is comfortable with networking. That surely is a given. However we all ought to talk to colleagues to find out what’s going on and who’s who.
When I was organizing knowledge-sharing events, I’d generally ask the people attending to take a couple of minutes to introduce themselves to someone in the room that they didn’t know. Yes, I forced the issue but it was only two minutes, enough time to ensure that the next time they met, they would no longer be complete strangers. The by-product of this little intervention was that the energy in the room surged, giving that day’s presenter an unexpected boost from the audience.
